Move over, Lindsay and Hilary. Here come Aly & AJ. The sister act is the latest teen sensation to break out of Hollywood.
Touring behind their debut disc, "Into the Rush,'' Alyson (Aly) and Amanda (AJ) Joy Michalka are white-hot. An Aly & AJ movie is on the horizon and the girls are expecting Disney to greenlight a television sitcom.
Aly, 17, already has made a name for herself on the Disney Channel's "Phil of the Future,'' while AJ, 15, has appeared on HBO's "Six Feet Under,'' the cl***ic soap opera "'General Hospital'' and "'Oliver Beene.''
While both sisters obviously enjoy acting, they say music is their primary p***ion.
"That's where it all started for us,'' Aly said while calling from San Diego. "Music is something we shared since we were kids in our bedroom. Music is what we love the most. We're not making music to advance our acting careers. Acting is great. You're playing somebody else. With music it all comes from your heart and soul. It's all you.''
The Michalka sisters started writing songs and making demo tapes three years ago. Talent is what separates them from many of the prefab Disney singers such as Hayden Panettiere or Caleigh Peters. Not only can Aly & AJ sing, they craft decent tunes.
"We pride ourselves on being able to write songs,'' Aly said. "What we write is based on what we or our friends experience.''
A few choice covers … including the Lovin' Spoonful cl***ic "Do You Believe in Magic'' and Katrina and the Waves' "Walking on Sunshine'' … are part of the "Into the Rush'' collection. The sisters recorded the former for the Disney Channel and the latter for the movie "Herbie Fully Loaded.'' Videos for both songs became two of the top-requested songs on the Disney Channel.
"Both of those songs fit us so well,'' Aly said. "Both songs are cl***ics. We relate to "Walking on Sunshine.' We feel as teenagers that we're always walking on sunshine.''
As for the teens and preteens who make up much of the Michalkas' fan base, they apparently relate to "Into the Rush,'' which will be showcased today at Six Flags Northern Star Arena in Jackson and on June 9 at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville.
"We're blown away by how well we've done,'' AJ said. "Everything is great, but we've worked so hard for it, which is fine. We love what we do. A lot of people just think that it's an easy world we're in. We make music and we act, but it's very demanding. We wouldn't do this if we didn't love it. I don't know how anyone who wants to be famous and have money can do it if their heart isn't in it.''
Schoolwork also figures into the mix for the Michalkas.
"Whenever we have a few spare minutes we'll crack open a history book,'' Aly said. "We do what we have to do. I'm excited since I'll be graduating in June. I'm not going to go to college at a normal age. I'll go down the road. We're going to focus on our careers.''
The Michalkas, who are very close, play best friends … not sisters … in their as-yet-untitled forthcoming film.
"That's easy for us to do,'' Aly said. "We've been best friends ever since I can remember. I prefer working with AJ. I can't think of anything that's more enjoyable.''
